Florboxoxo | Flower Meanings | Easter Lillies

Updated: May 7

With Easter around the corner, it only seemed fitting to highlight this holiday's central spotlight flower, the Easter Lily. For those who are unaware of the popularity of the Easter Lily during this time of the season, for a quick explanation, just as the well-known rose is synonymous with Valentine's Day, the Easter Lily is synonymous with Easter Sunday. Sourcingfrom Flowerpaedia (2018), authored by environmental artist and floral specialist Cheralyn Darcey, the Easter Lily has medicinal benefits to religious significance!

Easter Lily (Lilian longiflorum) represents female alignment, remembrance, hope, life, innocence, and purity. - Flowerpaedia (2018)

Historically the Easter Lily otherwise referred to as the Madonna Lily, has symbolized purity. For centuries, this flower has been closely associated with the Virgin Mary. Having religious significance, this flower is often cultivated for use in medicinal ointments. Ancient Greeks and Romans also utilized this flower's bulbs for food recipes. Today, this flower can still be found highlighting many cuisines throughout Eastern Asia and Europe.

Although Lillies can also grow from seed, raising these flowers from bulbs is preferred. Different species vary in the amount of sunlight that is required. Most species bloom in July or August. The flowering periods of certain species begin in late spring; others bloom in late summer or early autumn. (Britannica.com sourced in 2020)
