Peonies are poshly popular and cherished for their voluptuous bulbs and blousy petals. The colors vary in fairytale pink, ivory, lilac, burgundy, and more! Because these flowers bloom during the spring and summer, this sugared bloom is one of the most sought-after petals globally, especially during the wedding season! According to Flowerpaedia(2018), authored by environmental artist and floral specialist Cheralyn Darcey, the peony is a feminine flower representing wealth and romance!
Peony (Paronia officinalis) represents I wish you a happy marriage, happy wedding anniversary, wealth, honor, good health, prosperity, romance, compassion, shame, female fertility, and nobility - Flowerpaedia (2018)
According to the online resource Encyclopedia Britannica, britannica.com (sourced in 2020), there are three distinct peonies: herbaceous Eurasian peonies, Asian trees, and North American peonies. The fragrant Chinese peony (P. lactiflora) and the European common peony (P. officinalis) have given rise to the most familiar garden peonies. (P. lactiflora) . Horticultural varieties have been developed from the Chinese species P. suffruticosa. A race of hybrids, created by crossing P. suffruticosa with the yellow Chinese P. delayavi, has single and double flowers, sometimes tinged with red.
Many varieties have been grafted onto supportive rootstock and cannot be readily propagated by simple division. Peonies are seldom grown from seeds except in breeding programs; the seed takes about two years to germinate. Two peony species are native to North America. Brown’s, or western, peony (P. browni) ranges from California to Montana, and California peony (P. californica) is found only along the Pacific coastal mountains of California. - OXO
